The Emirate of Abu Dhabi officially took up the mantle of organizing and hosting the 20th World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) 2027

ZHO organizes 20th WFD Congress for the first time across MENA

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi officially took up the mantle of organizing and hosting the 20th World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) 2027 for the first time at the level of the Middle East and North Africa states, organized by the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO), during the celebration organized at the Sheikh Zayed Festival (SZF) in Al Wathba in the presence of a cohort of leaders and officials.

Dr. Joseph J. Murray, WFD's President, passed the baton to His Excellency Abdullah Al Humaidan, ZHO's Secretary-General.

His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ZHO's Chairman of the Board of Directors, extended his highest congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, on Abu Dhabi's hosting the 20th WFD 2027 for the first time at the level of the MENA states, following fierce competition from other countries during the voting process that took place within the work of the 19th WFD held in Jeju, South Korea.

His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan also congratulated His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Office, and His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council, wishing protection, security, safety and prosperity for our dear UAE.

His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan greeted and thanked all the institutions and entities cooperating with ZHO and the workforce that prepared a comprehensive host request file, playing great part in winning the vote of the Congress members to choose the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, despite the attempts of some competitors to woo voters towards other destinations. In this vein, His Highness spoke highly of the coordination with representatives of the deaf associations and organizations from Arab countries and the WFD's friendly countries, noting that this significant achievement reflects the great confidence of the international community in the UAE and its advanced structure that highlights the great successful organization of major international events and activities in the state, especially those for people of determination.

His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan confirmed that ZHO had begun, before the event, to prepare for this hosting to stand as the best in the WFD's history, as 125 countries and more than 2,000 deaf participants from all over the world are expected to participate.

For his part, His Excellency Abdullah Al Humaidan voiced his extreme pleasure with Abu Dhabi's official takeover of organizing the WFD, stressing that this step fulfills the vision of the UAE in general, and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in particular, on serving people of determination, in an effort to build bridges of cooperation and exchange experiences with relevant local, regional and international parties with regard to develop and exchange experiences with various international bodies specialized in people of determination's affairs.

His Excellency asserted that Abu Dhabi, with its distinct human cadres and integrated infrastructure, and ZHO's cadres, will prove and present to the world an unprecedented version of the Congress, in light of the wise leadership's support for development processes in myriad areas, demonstrating to all nations of the earth its superior ability to impress all at every opportunity, and its keenness to achieve the highest rates and standards of organizational success.

ZHO will work to prepare early to organize the Congress, which has been held on four-year basis since its inception in 1951, and is organized by the WFD and the host country. This event brings together delegates from national federations and youth organizations eager to take part in exchanging global best practices, experiences and knowledge, with the participation of deaf people from all around the globe. The Congress's theme is chosen by the host country, and the annual General Assembly meeting is held and strategic directions for the upcoming four years of its work, His Excellency explained.

For its part, the Supreme Organizing Committee of SZF 2023-2024 expressed its happiness at hosting the takeover ceremony in the Festival grounds, based on its keenness to organize and host community and humanitarian events and major activities that focus on building noble values that underpin renaissance and progress, and for which the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, worked hard for the sake of all groups and segments of Emirati society in general and people of determination in particular. The Committee emphasized the important contribution of the WFD Congress in achieving common visions on integrating the deaf category into societies, and raising awareness about their rights and capabilities and the importance of involving them in the development process in their societies.

The Committee organized a special tour for the participating people of determination to the SZF's various grounds and sections to introduce them to the authentic Emirati heritage, customs and traditions, and to involve them in cultural and entertainment events, as well as introducing them closely to the distinguished products at the ZHO's pavilion, which reflect the skill and determination of this category to produce and give. During the tour, the people of determination gravitated towards the traditional folk songs in the Festival grounds. They also learned about the activities provided by the national pavilions and participating countries, which enhance the Festival’s standing as a global meeting point for cultures and civilizations, bringing together families and individuals, whether citizens or residents, and tourists from all over the world in civilized, cultural and recreational an atmosphere wherein everyone from all segments of society participates.

Hosting the WFD Congress for the first time in Abu Dhabi comes in implementation of the decision of the 19th Congress held in Jeju, South Korea. Organized by ZHO, the 20th Congress is discussing common visions on integrating the deaf category into societies and raising awareness about their rights, capabilities and importance in the development process.

The Congress is such an opportunity for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to present its efforts under the directives of the wise leadership, its successful experience in caring for and empowering various categories of people of determination, especially the deaf, and a number of initiatives and policies that are consistent with international standards and embody the keenness to care for people of determination with the aim to render them active players in the construction process and sustainable development, as well as highlighting efforts to create an appropriate environment that enhances life quality for people of determination and their families, supports their energies to be able to produce and give, and facilitates their integration into society.

The meetings also aim to exchange the best global practices, experiences and knowledge among participating countries, and exchange views and opinions on qualifying the deaf in all fields, providing all necessary care for them, developing relations with national organizations and federations concerned with the deaf category from countries around the world, in addition to consolidating friendship and cooperation between the deaf on the continents represented by the participating countries, and deepening and reinforcing the societal role by contributing to supporting these category, and finally providing the opportunity for the deaf category to take part and express their opinions through the Congress and accompanying programs

The Congress includes a large cultural program of stage performances, cinema, exhibitions, arts, and visits to the most prominent local landmarks. The WFD works on promoting the human rights of deaf around the world, focusing on improving the status of national sign languages, delivering better education for the deaf, improving access to information and services, in addition to improving the human rights of deaf in developing countries, and encouraging the establishment of organizations for the deaf.
