As part of the celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, which is observed annually on March 21, Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination reaffirmed the importance of early intervention to provide support and care for individuals with Down syndrome. The organization aims to empower them and promote their effective inclusion in society by creating inclusive environments that value diversity and provide equal opportunities. This can be achieved through enhancing physical accessibility, removing social barriers, and implementing policies and practices that ensure equal opportunities for employment, education, and social participation for People of Determination, especially those with Down syndrome.
The organization stated that it currently provides services to 237 students with Down syndrome enrolled in its care and rehabilitation centers across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It highlighted that early intervention programs—such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, special education, and supportive services—play a critical role in developing essential skills in communication, self-care, social interaction, and academic learning for this group.
His Excellency Abdullah Ismail Al Kamali, Executive Director of the People of Determination Sector at Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination, emphasized the organization's full commitment to supporting individuals across all categories of People of Determination, especially those with Down syndrome. He stressed the importance of early intervention to develop their skills and enable their active integration into society. He noted that raising awareness about Down syndrome is crucial to ensuring that individuals with the condition receive support, understanding, and equal opportunities. Education plays a vital role in breaking stereotypes and promoting inclusivity. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by abnormal cell division that results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic material causes developmental changes and physical characteristics typical of Down syndrome. The severity of symptoms varies among individuals, often resulting in lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays.
Intellectual Disabilities:
Most children with Down syndrome experience mild to moderate cognitive impairment, delayed language development, and difficulties with both short-term and long-term memory. Typically, Down syndrome is diagnosed before or during birth.
