Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO) announced the opening of registration to participate in the Global Information Technology Challenge for People of Determination (GITC) competition, to be hosted by Abu Dhabi next October,

Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO) announced the opening of registration to participate in the Global Information Technology Challenge for People of Determination (GITC) competition, to be hosted by Abu Dhabi next October, for the first time in the Middle East at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).This comes as part of the Emirate’s endeavor to promote digital awareness and learning of digital skills by young people of determination with developmental disability.

The challenge is an initiative launched by the UAE government to empower people of determination, in line with Abu Dhabi’s strategy for people of determination to make the Emirate an inclusive and equipped city for people of determination and supportive of their rights. The competition is geared towards helping people of determination have access information thanks to their individual capabilities, without the need for help from others. The competition also serves as an opportunity to bridge the digital divide, which represents a challenging any digital transformation initiative for the people of determination with developmental disabilities.

Asaad Hawass, Director of ZHO’s Project Management Office, said that registration and receiving participation requests continue to the end of next June viahttps://gitcabudhabi.com/register/ar. It is followed by an evaluation of the applicants through the preliminary test to select 50 - 60 students to qualify for the preliminary round. After that, qualifiers for the preliminary round shall be registered at the competition’s main website in Korea, while the international competition will be held next October. Those wishing to register to participate are required to have laptops.

ZHO, in partnership with the supporting entities represented by Cyber Gate, the Cyber Security Council, Abu Dhabi Polytechnic University, and Al Ain University of Science and Technology, provides training for participants of determination wishing to develop their ICT skills, Hawass added, noting that the training, provided by experienced trainers in this area, will include whatever is related to the challenge and areas of participation. Necessary technical support and educational materials will be provided to achieve the maximum benefit for trainees. He also expressed his hope that participants will benefit and offer positive results and the mean theme.
Competition Areas
For her part, Latifa Saeed Al Khaili, Director of Project Follow-up and Management at ZHO’s Project Management Office, said,“The competition consists of six domains, and participants of determination can participate in more than one field. The fields are: evaluating the skills of creating and editing presentation using PowerPoint, evaluating the skills necessary to use jobs and calculate and edit data in certain circumstances using Excel, evaluating research skills and benefiting from information dealing with daily life problems using Internet, evaluating the skills of making and editing videos dealing with specific topics creatively, evaluating the skills of using the Scratch to program self-driving cars ( coding), and finally evaluating the skills to make life more suitable for people of determination through information technology or the basic idea.

GITC is a project aimed at enhancing GICT capabilities of young people of determination with developmental disabilities and laying the cornerstones for social progress and improving awareness of their digital accessibility. The UAE will be the first Middle Eastern and Arab country to host the event.

GITC kicked off in 1992 in South Korea with the aim of reducing the digital divide for people of determination. From 2011 on, GITC has been expanded to include young people of determination all over the world, with a focus on the Asia and Pacific region to enhance their societal engagement by enrolling them in higher education and providing job opportunities for them. In 2024, it will be developed into a more sustainable competition by enhancing the credibility of the internationally renowned competition and the independence of participating countries.
